Charlotte’s Back to School!

My little social butterfly went off to school again just after Labor Day. She missed school so much over the summer, but I think the summer days spent with Amelia and myself were tolerable.

She is back at Hazel Dell Christian Preschool, and her teacher this year is Miss Becky. Though she was just one of three girls in class last year, her class this year is evenly divided between boys and girls. There is one boy in her class from last year, but knowing Charlotte, she’ll make new friends in no time.

It’s also worth noting that when I asked Charlotte on the first day of school what she wanted to be when she grows up, she answered, “a ghost.”

I hope she always loves school as much as she does right now — go get’em, girl!

First day of school tradition: cupcakes after school!

Amelia: 10 Months

We’ve been experiencing some technical difficulties with our Macbook lately, which is why posts are so, so, so late. That — and the fact that time is passing way too quickly with two little girls. Sigh.

Dear Amelia,

Happy 10 months, baby girl! Just like months’ past, time is flying by too quickly — as evidenced by the fact that I cannot keep up with these blog posts. You are getting so big, so fun and so uniquely you.

Life slowed down a little bit in September. Charlotte started school again, and you and I were able to get back into more of a routine. You do, however, have days where we’re out and about and you don’t get a morning nap — but you’re doing fine with that! Fortunately, you’ve gotten more flexible as you’ve gotten older, which you need to be if you’re going to hang with this family.

You’ve also become more like a little kid than a baby as evidenced by the fact the you can find your own things to entertain you. You love playing at the library or at The Urban Chalkboard, an indoor play area for little kids. When we’re out and about, you’re also a big people watcher.

Two days after you started crawling, you began pulling up and cruising around furniture. You LOVE to cruise along the furniture, but thank goodness, you’re still a slow-moving crawler and cruiser.

We’re so looking forward to your birthday that’s just around the corner.

Love you big girl,

Mom and Dad

Weight: 16 lbs, 14 oz
Height: 28 1/2 in
Clothing size: 6 – 9 and 9 – 12 month clothes

Amelia Likes: Cruising, playing with toys, turning pages in books and exploring EVERYTHING.
Amelia Dislikes: Still getting ready for bed and not getting her way.

Firsts: Cruising and attempts at talking by saying “Dada” and “Mama.”

Diapers: Amelia is still in medium cloth diapers at home and size 3 disposables.

Sleep: We’ve officially dropped the third nap — Hooray!!! Amelia sleeps from 7:30 or 8 p.m. to about 7 a.m. She also takes two naps a day that are anywhere from an hour and a half to two hours. This girl LOVES her sleep, goes down right away and doesn’t make a peep all night.

Feed: Still nursing four times a day! We have introduced a sippy cup, and she doesn’t hate it. She just needs to work a little more on perfecting her technique. In addition to nursing and baby food, Amelia has really been experimenting with our food. She still has a pretty bad gag reflex so we’re just waiting that out.

I just can’t even with these monthly updates and photos, Mom.

Amelia: 9 Months

Dear Amelia,

What a month! It hasn’t just been crazy for us; it’s been crazy for you too! But despite all of the changes and moving around, your personality has completely blossomed. You are super happy these days, pretty laid back and curious as ever. We’ve obviously noticed a big change in you but so have others that you see pretty regularly.

We spent most of your ninth month on-the-go. First, we headed down to Nashville for Uncle Josh’s 30th, then to Evansville for Daddy’s work and a day trip to Holiday World. After, we flew out west to Montana to explore Glacier National Park. And last but not least, we made our way back down to Evansville to see your aunt, uncle and cousins that were unexpectedly home from Guam. Of the 30 days of your ninth month, we were gone for EIGHTEEN!

While we’ve been on-the-go as a family, you’ve been doing a lot of moving on your own too! You started crawling just a few days before you turned nine months and began pulling up on us just two days later. You’re still moving slow, thank goodness, but we’re so proud of you, baby girl!

As always, we love watching you grow and learn new things, but I’m getting a little sad that it’s all happening so fast. I wish I could keep you a little nugget for a while. We love you so much, Amelia Rose!

Height: 28 in
Clothing size: 6 – 9 month clothes

Amelia Likes: Crawling, laughing, flying on airplanes, playing with Charlotte’s big girl toys, remotes and phones and pulling all of her books off of her bookshelf.
Amelia Dislikes: Getting ready for bed, being woken up and being in a car seat for too long.

Firsts: Airplane ride, Knight summer vacation and crawling!

Diapers: Amelia is still in medium cloth diapers at home and size 3 disposables. Like I said above, she is such a little nugget!

Sleep: She still sleeps from about 7:30 p.m. to 7 a.m. and takes three naps a day. We are hoping to drop that third nap sometime in the next month though!

Feed: We are still nursing four times a day, followed by baby food at breakfast, lunch and dinner times. We’ve tried introducing real foods for the last few weeks, but she has a TERRIBLE gag reflex and sometimes throws everything back up. It’s at least getting better, though. She is able to do puffs and yogurt melts really well now — so we’re moving in the right direction!

Big Sky Country

This year, the Knight family embarked on another trip out West — this time to Glacier National Park in Montana. It’s safe to say that we were blown away by the beauty of the landscape. Now I understand what they mean by “purple mountain majesties.”

We stayed in Whitefish, which is about 45 minutes from the park entrance. It was a great mountain town with lots of delicious restaurants and quaint antique and gift shops. Our condo was actually on Whitefish Mountain. The ski village is about 15 minutes from town and offers a TON of outdoor activities as well. We took advantage of the mountainside zip lining, alpine slide and ski lift up to the top.

In Glacier, we obviously drove the Going-to-the-Sun Road. It took us an entire day, and it was definitely a thrill ride. For the majority of the ascension, you’re driving round and round up a mountaintop with little to no shoulder on the road. We also completed a few hikes in the park. The first was just a 2-mile round trip, easy hike near Lake McDonald. The other was a 4-mile, intermediate hike to Avalanche Lake. Ryan and I hiked carrying both girls, and it was quite the workout.

Both girls did great during our travels — especially Amelia! She definitely surprised us with how well she tolerated the interruptions to her schedule.

After these national park trips, Ryan and I say we’re going back with our girls and renting an RV for two weeks. The girls will probably think it’s the worst vacation ever — but we think they’ll secretly love it. Though we’re so thankful to be back home safely, we’re definitely looking forward to our next trip out to Big Sky Country.

Amelia: 8 Months

Dear Amelia,

I may not be timely on the monthly blog posts, but at least they’re getting done. Given that you turned nine months a few days ago, I thought it might be nice to catalog your eighth month.

It seems that you’ve decided that you finally like it here. Your demeanor is more happy, you’re more playful and a little less clingy. You love watching the world around you from our laps or arms — and lately, you’ve been wanting to join in on whatever is happening.

With that, you’re becoming a little more laid back, a little more flexible. You’re getting used to our crazy life with our weekends away and play dates during the week.

Speaking of weekends away, we did a bit of traveling this month — first to Evansville for the 4th of July and then to Chicago. It was your first trip to a city that holds a special place in our hearts, and though it didn’t blow you away, you tolerated it pretty well.

We love you so much, sweet girl. Snuggling with you is just the very best — can you always stay that way? We’re looking forward to the next month!

Love always,

Mom and Dad

Amelia Likes: Sitting in the exercauser or swing, listening to Mommy’s music (especially Sara Groves), sucking/chewing on baby carrots and looking at herself in the mirror.
Amelia Dislikes: Eating “real” food and getting her diaper changed before nap/bed.

Firsts: Swimming in the lake, visit to Chicago and 4th of July.

Diapers: Still doing medium cloth diapers at home and size 3 disposables.

Sleep: Amelia is still a great little sleeper! She goes to bed around 7:30 pm and wakes up at around 6:30 or 7 am. She still takes three naps a day. Her first two naps last for about two hours, and the final nap is anywhere from 45 minute to an hour long.

Feed: Amelia nurses four times a day and now takes baby food three times a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner). She is gradually eating more and more baby food, but it still takes about 48 hours for her to finish one 3.5 oz packet. We’ve tried to introduce real solid foods, but she has a really bad gag reflux. We’re working on puffs and yogurt melts as well as drinking from a sippy cup.

Amelia’s Nursery

I wanted to capture a few photos of Amelia’s nursery — just so we could preserve our memories. It’s a sweet little nursery, and I’ve loved spending so much time in it with our Amelia girl.

When we moved into this house in 2014, we painted the small bedroom next to the master a pale mint green, thinking it was a great gender neutral color for a nursery. When we found out we were having another little girl, I decided to mix in some grays, pinks and even a little black and white to the color scheme. I love how it all turned out, and I think Amelia likes it too!

This is the same crib and bedding we used for Charlotte. Even the mobile hanging above the bed is the same. However, I did switch out some of the fabric scraps to match Amelia’s “color palette.”
Changing table station. The gallery above is a mix of things off of Etsy, primarily. My favorite is the print that features 1 Samuel 1:27: For this child, I prayed. Though we prayed for Charlotte, praying for Amelia was a true test of waiting and wanting God’s will for our lives. I also embroidered the dragonfly on fabric to the lower left, which was a skill my grandmother taught me. I love that there is a little bit of her in this room.
This is where Amelia and I spend a lot of our time! Her glider features my baby blanket as well as the quilt Ryan’s friend, Katie, made for her. Above are our family photos we took while I was pregnant with Amelia.
Finally, we have her toy/book nook along with shelves that feature some keepsakes we’ve been given for her.

I love how this room came together — it was so much fun to make it piece by piece. Though she may not remember anything about this room, at least she’ll have these photos that tell the story of her very first room.
